History
Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) which was established in 1975 is located in Atlanta, Georgia and is one of five institutions in the Atlanta University Center. As a historically black institution, MSM works to recruit and train minority and other students as physicians, biomedical scientists, and public health practitioners who are committed to the primary healthcare needs of the underserved.
The School is accredited by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and awards the following degrees: M.D., dual MD/MPH degree, Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences, Master in Biomedical Sciences (MS), Master in Clinical Research (MS) and the Master of Public Health (MPH).
Program Overview
Housed within the National Center for Primary Care (NCPC) in the Department of Community Health and Preventive Medicine (CHPM), The MSM Master of Public Health (MPH) program is the first MPH program to be developed at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). The MPH program was established in 1995 in response to the increasing shortage of under-represented minorities in leadership positions in the field of public health.
Enhancing the MSM mission, the MPH program provides students comprehensive education and training in the core areas of public health, community-based research and community service. Focusing on people of color, underserved populations and minorities, the program prepares individuals to organize and implement programs to improve individuals’ health, quality of life and well being.
Mission
The mission of the MPH program is to prepare individuals who will organize and implement programs to improve the health, quality of life and well-being of communities and people, through education, research and service in public health. The program has a particular emphasis on people of color, minorities and other underserved populations
Accreditation
The MPH program was first accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) in 1999, making MSM the first HBCU, with an accredited MPH program.
In 2007, the program earned a maximum seven-year term CEPH re-accreditation period, from October 27, 2007 to December 31, 2014. |
