History
Meharry Medical College (Meharry) was founded in 1876 as the Medical Department of Central Tennessee College of Nashville, under the auspices of the Freedman's Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1900, Central Tennessee College became Walden University, and by 1915 the College gained a separate corporate existence from the university.
Meharry Medical College is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The College has full accreditation in the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Graduate Studies and Research and Allied Health Professions. The student body is comprised of more than 800 students from 43 states, the District of Columbia and 22 foreign nations.
Program Overview
The Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) is offered by the Meharry Medical College School of Graduate Studies and Research. The MSPH Program concentrates on teaching, research and community service. The Program is committed to training students who seek optimal health for people and their communities by way of public health approaches. The MSPH program supports the World Health Organization’s definition of health: “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
Mission
The mission of the Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) Program at Meharry Medical College is to improve the health of minorities and members of underserved communities through instruction, research, and service.
Accreditation
The MSPH Program was accredited in July 2009 for 5 years, from July 2009-June 2014, by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). |
