CAAPHP is the acronym for the Consortium of African American Public Health Programs.  CAAPHP is a group of seven public health programs/schools that are housed at the nation’s premiere Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

The Consortium is the sum of its significant parts.  CAAPHP’s member-institutions include three of the nation’s leading medical schools for training African American physicians, nurses and public health professionals and four graduate programs/schools that address inequalities that diminish the lives and restrain the potential of our communities.

History

Jackson State, established in 1877, is a historically black, co-educational, research intensive, public institution of higher learning designated by the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning as the “urban university” of Mississippi. The University is proud of its heritage, is committed to its future as a diversified, urban institution, and is dedicated to developing individual students and solving urban problems.

Program Overview

The Master of Public Health program was created in 1999.  In July 2004, the School was approved by the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning to offer the first and only Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree program in the state of Mississippi. The vision of the School of Health Sciences is to serve in a leadership role, in partnership with the community, in understanding and eliminating the pervasive inequalities affecting the health and healthcare of racial and ethnic minorities and other historically underserved populations.  Through collaboration with communities, the School works to promote health and prevent disease and disability with special emphasis on the underserved and at-risk populations in Mississippi, the nation and the global society.

The MPH Program is dedicated to providing quality graduate instruction, scientific inquiry and public service to: a) guide students to acquire the knowledge and develop the skills, competencies and attitudes that are essential for public health professional practice; b) encourage and promote student and faculty research; c) develop an understanding and appreciation of ethnic and cultural diversity and the impact of such diversity on personal and community health; d) to establish collaborative linkages with the community; and e) promote lifelong learning and professional growth.

The purpose of the DrPH program is to prepare students to become competent practitioners, research scientists and educators in different areas of public health.  The DrPH program will provide students with an experience that is multidisciplinary, problem-centered, fully engaged and integrative of the diverse elements needed in the education of the public health practitioner.

Mission

The mission of Jackson State University School of Health Sciences is to provide quality education and leadership in community-based research and practice. Through collaborative efforts with communities, the School promotes health and seeks to prevent disease and disability with special emphasis on the underserved and at-risk populations in Mississippi, the nation, and the world.

Accreditation

Jackson State University's Public Health Program in the School of Health Sciences has been accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) for five years, from October 4, 2008 through December 31, 2013. This accreditation applies to both the MPH and DrPH degrees, making Jackson State University's Doctorate of Public Health Program the only doctoral-accredited program in the State of Mississippi.
