The Consortium of African American Public Health Programs (CAAPHP) is a coalition of public health programs/schools established and operating at seven of the nation’s leading Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). These seven programs represent all public health programs currently operating at HBCUs.
The Consortium was formed in the fall of 1999 and was initially funded in 2001 through a grant from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Office of Minority Health of the Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA). CDC continues to fund the work of the Consortium.
Morgan State University served as the Consortium’s first coordinating agency under the leadership of Dr. Yvonne Bronner (2001-2006). In February 2006, Morehouse School of Medicine became the coordinating site and continues the Consortium’s work under the leadership of Dr. Patricia Rodney.
The CAAPHP mission directly reflects the mandate to create evidence-based programs of intervention that ensure that the United States can reduce gaps in health status among its citizens, in an effort to create and sustain a healthy workforce over future decades. The Consortium is committed to facilitating advocacy, research, teaching and service that increases public awareness of issues affecting marginalized communities.
CAAPHP's seven member institutions and their public health programs/schools prepare emerging public health professionals to deal with the socio-economic disparities which disproportionately affect our communities. The Consortium offers portals through which African -Americans can take charge of and begin to change the direction of those health and socio-economic onditions that diminish the quality and shorten the lifespan of people and communities of color. Some of our member institutions are located in the communities they serve and thus see it as their mission to address issues of poverty, hunger, homelessness, HIV/AIDS, mental illness, substance abuse and violence. CAAPHP is a critical platform in the arena of health disparities research for the design and successful implementation of prevention and intervention programs. CAAPHP provides speakers for national forums on health disparities.
The Consortium has been actively engaged in strengthening the faculty and curricula of its member organizations to achieve and sustain accreditation from the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).
