Research

The Institute conducts research in a variety of areas including birth defects surveillance, environmental justice, HIV/AIDS education and prevention, tobacco prevention program evaluation, diabetes education, and women’s health issues.
Program Overview

The Florida A&M University (FAMU) Institute of Public Health (IPH) was created by the Florida Legislature (as a Type II Center in the State University System (SUS) of Florida) in 1995.  The mission of the IPH is to improve the health status of the poor and underserved through graduate training, research, and service.  The IPH was created as the result of strong advocacy, at the grassroots level, to address disproportionately affected populations experiencing adverse health outcomes such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, infant mortality, HIV/AIDS, and environmentally-related conditions. Senate Bill 1610 gave FAMU the authority to offer the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree.  The former Florida Board of Regents gave FAMU the authority to implement the MPH Degree Program in the Spring of 1997.  The first cohort of seven students was admitted in the Fall of 1997.
Accreditation

The FAMU MPH Program received full, maximum accreditation, for an initial review, in 2000 for five years (2000-2005) and seven years of
re-accreditation (2005-2012) by the national Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).  Currently, FAMU MPH Program is the only CEPH-accredited graduate public health program in North Florida.
Curriculum

The MPH degree program emphasizes graduate training and development of research regarding diseases and health problems that includes, without limitations, the human health effects associated with acute and chronic disease, environmental pollution, and violence.  Specifically, The MPH Program offers course work and field experience in five public health core and track areas: environmental and occupational health, epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy and management, and behavioral science and health education.  The course of study consists of either a 42-hour program or a 48-hour program.  Eligibility for matriculation in the 42-hour program is dependent on (1) completion of a relevant graduate degree in the health sciences, or (2) substantial professional or educational experience in public health or a closely related discipline.  The 48-hour program is required for those who hold baccalaureate degrees and have limited or no professional experience in the field of public health.  In addition to receiving a strong foundation in these core disciplines, students gain additional depth in a chosen substantive area of public health through course work and public health practice through field experience and an internship.  Students are also required to present a public health research project and pass a written comprehensive examination.

Faculty

Faculty in the Institute provide leadership, instruction, research and specialized training in public health. The Institute utilizes existing faculty and staff within the Schools of Allied Health  Science and Nursing, the Environmental Sciences Institute, the COPPS and the School of Graduate Studies, Research and Continuing Education. Due to the interdisciplinary programmatic requirements of the program, faculty from the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Social Work, Sociology and Criminal Justices also hold joint appointments in the Institute.

Mission

The mission of the Florida A&M University (FAMU) Institute of Public Health (IPH) MPH Degree Program is to develop and produce culturally competent public health practitioners through graduate training, research and service.
Current Developments

Due to the substantial health disparities in the state of Florida and the Nation, and the need for trained culturally competent public health leaders in research and service, the FAMU IPH has included in its strategic plan the development of new degree programs (i.e., Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) and the Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH)).  The FAMU IPH received authority to develop and implement the DrPH Degree Program by the FAMU Board of Trustees (BOT) and the State University System Board of Governors (BOG) on March 9, 2004 and October 21, 2004, respectively.  The first DrPH students began matriculation in January of 2005. Ultimately, the IPH at FAMU will help Florida address the cause, and not merely the symptoms, of crucial public health issues affecting the state of Florida.

Alumni

FAMU has graduated 143 students with the MPH degree.
